Overview
The Laboratory for Advanced System Software (LASS) investigates systems issues for distributed systems ranging from large server clusters to networks of small sensors. Our past and current research has focused on issues in operating systems, distributed systems, networking, mobile systems, web and multimedia. We build prototype systems and understand them using analysis and experimentation.
Research Areas
OS, Storage, & Virtualization
Our research focuses on OS support for large server and disk farms. Research issues of interest include:- Use of virtualization technology for server clusters and dekstops.
- Design of self-managing data centers.
- Design of self-managing storage systems.
Sensor Networks
Our sensor network research is being jointly pursued with the Wireless Sensors Group. Our research focuses on:- Storage and data management issues for wireless sensor networks.
- Design of camera sensor networks.
- Design of mobile robotic sensor networks.
Pervasive Multimedia Systems
Our research focuses on the design of innovative pervasive multimedia applications that are enabled by:- Ubiquitious deployment of positioning technology such as GPS.
- Emergence of numerous technologies such as RFID and low power sensors.
- Wide availability of digital recording devices.
RFID Data Management
Our research focus is on data management issues in RFID networks that are deployed in enterprise supply chains and healthcare environments.People
